Hugo was born July 25, 1985 in El Carmelo, Valle de Pija, Colombia. He arrived in Mexico in the 2006 season, where he joined Club de Futbol Monterrey. He played for a short time after which he was sent out on loan to F.C. Atlas for the rest of the 2006 season. In 2007, he was transferred to Necaxa. Hugo's first start in international play was in a friendly match of Columbia against Venezuela in the Copa America 2007. During that game, he played briefly as the goal keeper. The starting keeper had received a red card and Columbia had no more substitutes. Columbia won that game 1 - 0. Hugo was again called up to the national team on November 7 having just finished a successful season in the Mexican League scoring 9 goals in 15 games. On December 20, 2008 Nexaca started negotiations with Wigan Athletic for a transfer. On January 6th 2009, Wigan manager Steve Bruce agreed on a 4.5m GBP and was confident that a work permit would be granted allowing Hugo to join the team. The work permit has been granted. Hugo must now pass his medical on January 22nd. Hugo is expected to make his Premier League debut against Liverpool at the JJB Stadium on January 28th.
